DAVIDSON, N.C. — Chloe Johnson from San Diego State was recently added to the women's basketball roster as a transfer and will join the Wildcats this coming fall, as announced by sixth-year head coach Michele Savage.
Johnson, who played her first two years with the Aztecs, will sit out this season before suiting up for the Wildcats in 2016-17. She will have two years of eligibility remaining after the 2015-16 season.
A 5-foot-7 guard, Johnson played in a combined 60 games as a freshman and sophomore at SDSU. She cracked the starting lineup 37 times overall, including earning 23 starts last year. During Johnson's two seasons, she averaged 2.5 points and 1.7 rebounds, while dishing out 89 assists. She had 50 of those assists as a freshman in 2013-14 when she received Mountain West preseason freshman of the year honors. Johnson was also twice named to the MW all-academic team.
Johnson is a native of Phoenix, Ariz., and was part of a very successful girls basketball prep program at St. Mary's High School. She earned three letters under the guidance of Curtis Ekmark, who was a 2012 Naismith Coach of the Year honoree. The guard was part of a three-year run that saw the Knights go 87-3 and win three straight Arizona Division I state championships (2011-2013). In 2011-12, St. Mary's was ranked No. 1 nationally and ended the 2012-13 season with a No. 9 national ranking by MaxPreps.com.
During her prep career, Johnson earned Division I first-team all-state honors and was a first-team all-conference selection. She captured the 2012 Youth of the Year award from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix. Besides lettering in basketball, Johnson competed in volleyball and track as a prep, finishing eighth in the 100-meter hurdles at the Arizona state meet.
Davidson will be entering its second year in the Atlantic 10 as it returns nine of its 12 letterwinners from a year ago, including all five of its starters.
