DAVIDSON, N.C. — The second day of the Davidson Invitational saw the Wildcats pick up eight singles wins combined vs. Campbell and UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
The trio of J.B. Gough, Jordan Hart and Matthew Rose each picked up two singles wins on the day. The senior Gough earned 20 points on the day by taking a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 4 vs. Campbell and then scoring a three-set victory over the Bulldogs after taking a tie-breaker win in the third set, 10-8. He split his first two sets at 6-2 and 4-6.
Hart, playing at No. 6, won a pair of three-set efforts vs. Campbell, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, and UNC Asheville, which he came back from a set down to score a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win. The senior earned 12 points with the two wins.
In his first-ever Fall collegiate singles event, Rose came back from dropping the first set (2-6) to earn 6-2 and 6-1 wins in the next two sets vs. Campbell. He then needed another extra set to registering a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 decision over his UNC Asheville opponent to get eight points on the day.
Junior Shamael Chaudhry was one of three 'Cats to pick up one singles win on the day. He started the day with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over his Campbell opponent before falling to UNC Asheville. Chaudhry was credited with 16 points for his win at No. 1 vs. Campbell.
Ricky Saad and Thomas Mason recorded eight and two points, respectively, in their wins at No. 5 and 8 positions. The senior Saad regrouped from falling to Campbell in a tightly played match (6-4, 7-6) to take home a three-set victory against UNCA, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Like Rose, fellow freshman Mason won his first-ever Fall singles match with a 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-1 triumph against Campbell.
The invitational is a points system, with points being determined based on position. The No. 1 singles position is worth 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which is worth two points. The top doubles spot is worth eight points, then going down to No. 4, which is worth two.
The final day of the Invite is set for Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
