Fast Start Leads Davidson to 19-6 Road Win

KENNESAW, Ga. — Davidson raced out to a 7-1 lead in the first 16 minutes of play and went on to pick up its first win of the season with a 19-6 victory at Kennesaw State Saturday in women's lacrosse at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Seven different Wildcats scored during the opening run, sparked by freshman Charley Orner's second career goal at the 29:17 mark. Morgan Burch and Lucy Sexton each added an assist to go with their goals during the run.
In all, nine players scored on the day, as Davidson (1-1) remained perfect against Kennesaw State all-time at 4-0.
For the second game in a row, Emma Sissman paced the offense, tallying five goals to give her nine in the first two games of the season.
Nicole Pettiglio, Sarah Kopp and Burch each registered three goals, while Burch finished with four points overall. Christine Molinari added another three assists to give her eight in the first two games of the year, while adding a goal.
Scoring single goals were Jean Atkinson, Sophia Sgroi (first career) and Sexton (2 assists).
Davidson dominated in shots (35-17, putting 28 of those on goal) and draw controls (23-4), while the Owls had a 9-7 edge in groundballs and was 6-for-8 in clears.
Olivia Hokanson paced the Owls (0-2) with two goals, while four others scored one goal each. Shannon Moore earned the lone assist.
Kennesaw State closed to within two goals, 8-6, when it answered Davidson's run to start the game with a 5-1 run of its own from the 12:10 mark to just five minutes left in the first half.
Sissman and Pettiglio gave the 'Cats their final two goals of the half with 2:18 and 1:23 remaining to make it 10-6.
Davidson would shutout the Owls in the second half, outscoring them 9-0. Sissman scored three of her five goals in the half, while Burch and Kopp scored two each. Molinari picked up two assists in the half as well.
Senior Holly Thomas pulled in a career-high eight draw controls, while Kopp followed with a season-best six. Veronica Fiorino and Burch had a pair of groundballs apiece.
Between the pipes, Rose Woolson and Dana Stasieluk each played 30 minutes, combing for six saves. Woolson earned her first collegiate win, earning two saves and a groundball.
Davidson next will host Winthrop, Feb 28, for a 2 p.m. contest at Richardson Stadium.
