NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 Conference today released the league opponent dates for each team as the Davidson women's basketball team found out when they will be playing their 13 league opponents.
With the release of the league dates, the Wildcats' 2016-17 schedule is set after they released their non-conference slate Monday, Sept. 19.
Entering its third year in the A-10, Davidson will face each of the 13 conference opponents during the 16-game league schedule that features eight home and eight away games. The Wildcats open A-10 play at home on New Year's Eve against Saint Louis, the only time they will play the Billikens this year after facing them twice each over the past two seasons.
Starting the new calendar year will be trips to Fordham and Duquesne, Jan. 4 & 7. Davidson split its two games last year with the Rams, netting a 69-51 win at home.
Other road games feature George Washington (Jan. 15), which won the A-10 regular season and tournament titles for the second consecutive year, St. Bonaventure (Jan. 25), Massachusetts (Feb. 4) and George Mason (Feb. 8). Closing out the year, Davidson will play at Saint Joseph's and VCU, Feb. 18 & 21.
Games at home will feature Massachusetts (Jan. 12), George Mason (Jan. 18), La Salle (Jan. 21), Richmond (Jan. 28) and Dayton (Feb. 1). The 'Cats final two home games of the season will be against Rhode Island and Fordham, Feb. 11 & 14.
Davidson will have one league game televised on the road this year. It will be featured on CBS Sports Network at GW, with game time set for 2 p.m.
The home and home series will see the Wildcats face Fordham, George Mason and Massachusetts. It marks the third year in a row the 'Cats face Fordham twice.
Davidson returns eight letterwinners from last year's team that went 11-19 overall and 5-11 in league play. Leading the way will be top returning scorer junior Mackenzie Latt, a former A-10 All-Rookie Team member. The forward averaged a personal-best 14.2 points a game and hauled in over six rebounds, pacing the team with 193 rebounds overall, while shooting 46 percent from the floor. Latt's 187 made field goals were the fifth-most in a Wildcat single season.
The 2017 A-10 Championship will feature a new, enhanced format, with six first-round games being on campus sites before heading to Richmond, Friday through Sunday, for the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final games. The top two championship seeds will receive a bye, with the remainder of the field facing off in games hosted by seeds 3-8 for the first round. The first round will take place on the Saturday and Sunday prior to the weekend of the quarterfinals, semifinals and final. In 2017 the first round will be Feb. 25-26 with the three final rounds being played March 3-5.
During the 2015-16 season, the Atlantic 10 had six women's basketball teams qualify for postseason play – three in the NCAA Tournament and three in the Women's NIT. George Washington defeated third-seeded Duquesne in the 2016 championship final at the Richmond Coliseum, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, and was joined by Duquesne and St. Bonaventure in the field of 64. Dayton, Saint Louis and VCU were selected to take part in the WNIT.
