DAVIDSON, N.C. – Jacori Hayes scored a goal and set up the eventual game-winner to lead nationally-ranked Wake Forest past Davidson, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Alumni Stadium.

The Demon Deacons, who entered allowing just two goals through their first nine contests, improve to 8-1-1, while the Wildcats fall to 1-7-0.

Shortly after Hayes put No. 8 Wake Forest up 1-0 in the 68th minute, the All-ACC performer chipped a pass to Hank Gauger, who put away his one v. one attempt.

Davidson's lone goal came from junior Cort Coxhead, who scored off a perfectly placed free kick from just outside the box, with just under three minutes left.

The goal also snapped Wake Forest's record for consecutive shutout minutes at 855:46, which evens out to 14 hours, 15 minutes and 46 seconds of game action.

Andrew Kenneson led both keepers with four saves for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats started five freshmen, including central defender Louis Evans, who was making his collegiate debut. In addition, Maxi Pragnell and Christian Fechter, Davidson's leading scorers, came off the bench as the club prepares for this weekend's conference opener. A total of 20 different Wildcats played in the contest.

Fechter had one of the Wildcats' better chances in the first half, a shot from 15 yards out that missed wide following a pass from Jaylen Thompson.

Coach Spear's Postgame Comments
The guys dug in and fought valiantly against a high quality-team. Wake passes better than any team we have faced.

After starting slow - partially due to Wake's talent - we grew in to the game culminating with a great opportunity in transition with Christian Fechter's shot.

The second half we continued to defend well and started to get forward too. With a ranked opponent, the longer you stay in the match the more you start to believe.

Unfortunately we did not do well on their goals. The first was off a goal kick that their best player brought down at midfield too easily, was allowed to turn and dribbled uncontested before his shot. The second goal the back four tried to hold too high of a line and a cheeky scoop pass and well timed run beat us.

Super happy that Cort scored such a wonderful goal. Incredible shot up and over the wall. Highlight reel worthy.

We gave lots of guys a run tonight and that was intentional, especially as we want to be as fresh as possible in the A-10 opener.  And for the five starting freshmen in particular this was an important learning opportunity.
