DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Davidson men's tennis player Artem Khrapko earned a spot in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I National Singles Rankings for November 15, earning a ranking of 120th in the lone poll that comes out during the Fall season.
He becomes the first Wildcat during head coach Drew Barrett's 12 years at Davidson to be ranked in singles. The last men's tennis player to be ranked in singles was Davidson hall of Famer Jon Pastel '98, who was 40th in the nation in 1998. In 2012, the duo of Calum Gee '12 and Joe Schafer '13 became the program's first-ever doubles team to be ranked in the ITA, as they were 19th in that season's first rankings of the year.
A native from Corning, N.Y., Khrapko had a nice final Fall season for his career. He started out with a singles and two doubles wins at the Davidson Fall Invitational. He followed that up with two singles wins, including a 6-1, 6-3 win against a James Madison opponent at No. 1, at the Queens Invitational. The senior took part in the USTA/ITA Regional Championship, advancing out of the first round by upsetting No. 4 seed Christian Seraphim from Wake Forest with a strong 7-6(4), 6-3 victory. Khrapko's singles weekend ended though with a tough three-set defeat to Alexander Lykou of Presbyterian.
At the Charlotte Invitational, Oct. 27-29, Khrapko had a solid showing in the A1 singles bracket, picking up three wins on the weekend. He scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory Friday against Panu Virtanen of Vanderbilt before falling to No. 2 seed Simon Sondergaard, 6-1, 6-3. The senior regrouped on the consolation side and scored a three-set (4-6, 7-5, 6-0) win against his Richmond opponent, and later a 6-4, 6-2 win over another Vandy player.
He wrapped up his Fall season by play at the Wake Forest Invitational and scoring a couple of straight-set victories in the A2 singles draw.
Khrapko was one of five Wildcats to reach double-digit wins in singles a year ago with a 12-8 record, playing positions No. 2-5. He closed out the season on a three-match win streak. For his three-year career so far, Khrapko has sported a 38-25 singles mark, with 10-6 record in A-10 matches. He has added another 24 wins in doubles action in 45 matches.
