NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Freshman Sarah Donovan collected the Wildcats' first Atlantic 10 women's basketball weekly award this season when she was named the league's rookie of the week for games played, Nov. 13-19.
Donovan becomes the program's second player to garner A-10 Rookie of the Week honors after Mackenzie Latt won the award twice in 2014-15. She is also the third player overall to win a weekly award after Justine Lyon won named co-player of the week last year.
The first-year forward from London, Ontario, Canada, led Davidson to a 1-1 week against Furman and Appalachian State by averaging a team-best 14.5 points, while pulling in 7.0 rebounds a game. Donovan shot 47.4 percent from the floor and was 11-of-13 from the free throw line. She had swished home her first 13 straight free throws to start the year before missing two this past week.
Donovan recorded a season-high 15 points and nine rebounds at Furman. Then against Appalachian State, she led the Wildcats with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 4-for-6 from the line to go with five rebounds.
On the year, the freshman is averaging 11.5 points and 5.0 rebounds a game, while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor and a team-best 89.5 percent from the charity stripe (17-for-19) through her first four collegiate games.
Davidson plays its home opener this coming Wednesday, Nov. 22, against UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
