DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Katie Turner drained a game-winning three-pointer with 37 ticks left and Davidson withstood a last-second shot from Charlotte to earn a 68-66 victory Thursday afternoon in a matchup of cross-county rivals inside John M. Belk Arena.
Trailing 66-65 after the 49ers' Amaya Ransom hit a layup with 52 seconds left to erase a three-point deficit, Davidson called a timeout to advance the ball. Out of the timeout, the Wildcats worked the ball around the perimeter when Turner squared up on the far right wing and buried a three-ball to give the lead back to Davidson with 37 seconds remaining.
The Wildcats (5-7) then withstood a flurry of shots from Charlotte in the closing 10 seconds. The 49ers miss two layups, but would draw a foul on the third shot attempt in the same possession. They missed both free throws though, and were forced to foul with 5.1 seconds remaining.
Davidson was unable to ice the game with two of its own missed free throws giving Charlotte one more chance to tie the game. An in-bounds play under the basket saw Octavia Wilson get off a shot in the paint that hit the back of the iron and fell off as the horn sounded to give Wildcats the victory and snap their eight-game losing streak in the series.
Turner was one of three 'Cats to score in double figures, finishing with 17 points and hitting all five of her field goals from downtown.
Mackenzie Latt had game highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Justine Lyon rounded out the trio of double-figure scorers with 19 points and picked up a career-best seven assists.
Charlotte (3-8) had three double figure scorers as well, paced by Ransom's 14 points. Laia Raventos scored 13 points and Wilson had 12, getting nine of those at the charity stripe, while Dara Pearson pulled in 10 rebounds.
The 49ers, who won the battle on the glass 40-37, used the charity stripe to its advantage, sinking 23-of-31 attempts, but the Wildcats turned 22 of their turnovers into a season-high 25 points and got 14 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds.
Both teams lead by as many as six points in the first quarter before it ended with Davidson down just one, 21-20. The Wildcats grabbed a 29-25 lead in the second quarter on a triple by Turner with 6:24 left. They held the advantage until Charlotte pulled ahead in the final 1:30 with six consecutive free throws by Wilson to close the quarter down 36-35.
Davidson trailed by six three different times in the third quarter before ending it with a Saadia Timpton jumper to make it 52-48.
The 'Cats take a seven-day Christmas break before closing out the calendar year with a trip to UCF, Dec. 28.
