DAVIDSON, N.C. — Despite Justine Lyon scoring a season-high 22 points, Elon had four double-digit scorers and Davidson was held to 30 percent shooting in dropping a 75-58 decision Wednesday evening in women's basketball inside John M. Belk Arena.
Elon broke open a close game by outscoring the Wildcats (3-6) in the second quarter 17-8 after the 'Cats had an 18-17 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Phoenix would push its lead out to as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
Lyon had a very efficient night, hitting 6-of-8 field goals, including 3-for-4 from behind the arc, and swished home all seven free throws (a season high) to hit the 20-point mark for the first time this year. She also added six rebounds, a block and two steals.
Senior Mackenzie Latt added 14 points and six rebounds, moving over the 700 career mark in boards, while Katie Turner also hit for 14 points as she drained all six of her shots from the charity stripe. Davidson went 21-for-29 overall from the free-throw line.
The Phoenix were led by Ra'Shika White with 21 points off the bench. Malaya Johnson added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Shay Burnett and Saadia Munford chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jada Graves pulled in 10 rebounds.
After Lyon gave the 'Cats an 18-17 lead with a driving layup in the lane before the final horn ended the first quarter, Elon opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run to grab a 27-20 lead. Davidson had just two points during the opening five minutes and would head into halftime down 34-26.
The Phoenix lead would grow to 14 at 49-35 on a White thee-point play with 4:49 left in the third quarter and Davidson ended the quarter trailing 54-40.
A Lyon three-point play at the 7:07 mark in the fourth got the 'Cats within 11 (56-45), but Elon answered with a 12-3 run to go up 20 and just a little over four minutes left to play in the game.
Elon had a 45-36 advantage on the glass and turned 24 Wildcat turnovers into 22 points. Both teams combined to shoot 68 free throws and hit 46 total.
Davidson takes a break for final exams and then returns to the hardwood next Friday, Dec. 15, for an Education Day game at 11:30 a.m. against Gardner-Webb.
GAME NOTES: This was the 28th meeting all-time dating back to Feb. 23, 1977 season between both teams … despite the setback, Davidson still holds a 19-9 lead … both teams last met during the 2013-14 season … Justine Lyon has scored in double figures in 29 of her the last 32 games overall dating back to last season … the junior's 20-point outing was the 10th of her career … Lyon paced the team in scoring for the sixth time this year … Mackenzie Latt needs six more points to move into 9th all-time in scoring … the 21 free throws matched a season high for the 'Cats and was the third time this year they have hit at least 20 in a game.
