PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Davidson overcame a six-goal deficit in the second half by using a 9-2 run to claim a dramatic 14-13 victory over fourth-seeded George Mason in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship Thursday afternoon at Sweeney Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's.
The fifth-seeded Wildcats (8-9) won their first-ever game in the league championship and will now advance to the semifinals where they will take on Massachusetts, the top seed, Friday at 1 p.m. George Mason saw its season end at 11-7.
Davidson regrouped after falling to the Patriots less than a week ago, 19-9, in its regular season finale and did it in dramatic fashion. Senior Annie Brockett tallied the game-winning goal when she broke up a 13-all tie with 1:04 left by scoring her fifth goal of the game and the 48th of her season. Davidson had trailed 11-5 before pulling out the victory.
George Mason won the ensuing draw control, but with 28 ticks left in regulation the Wildcats forced a turnover and Sarah Kopp scooped up the groundball. Davidson used its last time out after getting the clear attempt with 18 seconds and despite a turnover of its own with seven seconds on the clock, escaped with the victory when the Patriots' long throw went out of bounds.
Brockett scored all five of her goals during the 'Cats' game-changing 9-2 run to pace the offense. Jordan Wood had a season-high three goals, while fellow freshman Shayne Antolini recorded four points on two goals and two assists. Adding three points was Christine Molinari with a goal and two assists.
George Mason was led by Alexa McGovern's four goals, followed by Jordan Sdanowich with three, and Taylor Altomare and Hailey Johnson with two each. Altomare added two assists, while Lindsey Tangeman dished out a team-high three.
Down by six with 23:28 on the clock, Davidson started its comeback with four straight goals, two each by Antolini and Brockett.
A Mason goal with 11:41 would briefly halt the Wildcats' momentum, but Brockett struck again a little over three minutes later to make it 12-10. Wood followed with her eighth score of the game and Brockett knotted things up at 12-all with 4:16 on the clock.
Two minute later, Kopp gave the 'Cats a 13-12 lead on a free-position goal, but McGovern tied the game up one last time with a score at the 1:46 mark before Brockett's game-winner.
Davidson grab the early advantage to start the game, scoring the first goal off the stick of A-10 All-Second Team member Nicole Pettiglio, her 30th for the season, at the 26:29 mark thanks to an assist from Molinari.
The two 'Cats then hooked up again at 19:36, this time Molinari scoring the goal off a helper from Pettiglio to make it 2-1.
The Patriots though would tie things up at the 13-minute mark and eventually ended the first half on a 6-1 run to go up 7-3 at the break.
Between the pipes, Rose Woolson was credited with 12 saves, four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Mackenzie Sivilli had two groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control to pace the defense.
Postgame Comments from head coach Kim Wayne: "I couldn't be more proud of the way this team performed today. After losing 19-9 less then a week ago, we came out knowing that we were better than the Davidson team that performed last Saturday and we showed it. This team is beyond special and they have proved it in so many ways and against so many different opponents. No matter what obstacle has been thrown our way we have overcome it together. Being down (once again) was nothing new to us and we persevered. I am proud of my three seniors, Annie, Nic and Kendall for not allowing today to be it for us. They stepped up big time and they are better people and players for it. They love this team and this team loves them. Tomorrow is just another challenge we are ready to face. Together."
