CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- In a winner's bracket battle of crafty lefties, Davidson baseball's Evan Roberts pitched a gem as the Wildcats continued its magical postseason run Saturday, knocking off second-seeded Florida Gulf Coast, 2-1, to advance to Sunday's Chapel Hill Regional Championship at Boshamer Stadium.
The Wildcats, who pulled the tournament's biggest upset yesterday with an 8-4 win over No. 2 National seed North Carolina, will face the winner of the Tar Heels / FGCU, Sunday at 6 p.m.
Davidson, which improves to a program-best 34-24 overall, is the second A-10 team (VCU - 2015) in the last three years to advance to a Regional final.
Roberts went eight innings before allowing a run to begin the ninth. The junior left-hander walked just one while scattering five hits and striking out two. Senior Westin Whitmire entered to close out the victory, retiring the side with two Ks to pick up his single-season record-holding 13th save of the season.
Davidson's offensive heroics came from sophomore Eric Jones, who banged out three hits and drove in the eventual game-winner with a single up the middle in the eighth. The 'Cats got at least one hit from hitters 1-7 in the lineup, including senior Will Robertson, who extended his school-record on-base streak to 53 games with a single in the sixth.
After stringing together three straight singles from senior Brian Fortier, Jones, and sophomore Justin Lebek, the Wildcats grabbed the early 1-0 advantage in the second.
A pitcher's duel ensued, as fellow southpaw Josh Dye was also impressive on the hill for Florida Gulf Coast (43-19), going the distance with five strikeouts.
What started as an insurance run became a necessity after junior Cam Johnson led off the eighth with a hit to right center, advanced to second on a Fortier walk and later scored on Jones' first-pitch screamer up the middle.
The Eagles' avoided the shutout and threatened in the ninth, after their top-hitter Nick Rivera blasted a solo shot to right center.
The Davidson defense as a whole was exceptional, including two outstanding catches from Robertson at right, and multiple dynamic stops from the entire infield.
