NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 released its women's basketball postseason awards Thursday and after stellar seasons, senior Mackenzie Latt and freshman Katie Turner were each honored by being named to the all-league's third and rookie teams in advance of the A-10 Championship heading to the Richmond Coliseum Friday for the quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
Latt becomes the first Wildcat to garner a spot on one of the three all-league teams, while Turner is the second player to earn all-rookie team honors after Latt made it her freshman year in 2014-15. Last year, Justine Lyon was named the A-10 Most Improved Player.
George Mason's Natalie Butler and Nicole Cardano-Hillary were named the A-10 Player and Rookie of the Years, while G'mrice Davis of Fordham was the defensive player of the year. After leading the Flyers to the regular season title and top seed, Shauna Green of Dayton was named the A-10 Coach of the Year. Micaela Parson of Richmond was tabbed most improved player of the year and George Washington's Kelli Prange was the league's sixth woman of the year.
A native of Richland, Mich., Latt leaves the program as one of its all-time best players after an outstanding four-year career. Her name is etched throughout the record books in 10 different categories, including ranking second all-time in rebounds (885) and made field goals, while finishing third in scoring (1,591) and fifth in blocks. Latt started every game she played in for her career, 117, while finishing with averages of 13.6 points and 7.6 rebounds a game, both good for eighth-best all-time.
As a senior this year, the 6-foot-1 forward started all 30 games and paced the team by averaging 14.9 points and 8.2 rebounds a game (sixth in the A-10), while also finishing tops in made field goals (188, a career-high and fourth-most in a Wildcat single season), blocks (career-high tying 31) and steals (54, a personal-best).
Latt registered eight double-doubles, the second-most in her career, to give her 27, while she scored in double figures 22 times to give her 86 for her career. In addition, the senior scored 20-plus points four times this year and ended her career with 14. Latt had games of 31 and 32 (a career-best) points in leading Davidson to wins vs. UMass and at Rhode Island.
One of the top freshmen in the league this year, Turner shined from the start as she stepped into the starting lineup for the Wildcats from day one. Like Latt, she started all 30 games this year, with averages of 11.4 points and 3.5 rebounds, while dishing out a team-best 107 assists (3.6 per game) and hitting 81.4 percent of her shots from the charity stripe.
The Reno, Nev., native set a new Wildcat single-season record by draining 75 three-pointers on 183 attempts, which is third-most in a single season. She shot 41 percent from behind the arc, which also ranks in the single season top-10. Three different times this year Turner drilled home a team and season-best six three-pointers in a game, while hitting at least three in a game 16 times including the final five games in a row.
Twice this year Turner reached the 20-point mark, including a season-best 23 at Furman, while she scored in double figures in 18 games overall. The 5-foot-8 guard ended the year on a 10-game streak of scoring in double digits, averaging just over 14 points and 3.7 rebounds a game, and shooting 41.7 percent (30-72) with 39 total assists (3.9 per game).
Davidson doubled its win total this year from a season ago, finishing 12-18 overall and a school-best 7-9 in A-10 play. The Wildcats season ended at Richmond in a first round defeat to the Spiders.
