DAVIDSON, N.C. — Former Davidson College men's basketball standout Brendan Winters has signed to play with the NBA's Golden State Warriors' summer squad in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League (TVSL) as announced by the club's front office Monday, July 3.
Winters, a 6-5, 205-pound wing player from Denver, Colo., capped his career by leading the Wildcats to a Southern Conference Tournament title and berth in the NCAA Tournament. He was the SoCon Tourney MVP on the strength of his career-high 33 points in the championship game. For his career, Winters scored 1,892 points, fourth all-time at Davidson, and set a school record with 268 three-pointers. In addition, the 2005 SoCon Player of the Year and earned honorable mention All-America honors from the Associated Press as a junior.
This past season, Winters was named to the NABC All-District 5 second team, one of just two players to make the squads outside of the ACC. He also was selected to the All-Southern Conference first team for the third consecutive year, becoming just the fifth Wildcat to earn the honor three times. In addition, Winters was one of five finalists for the Chip Hilton Award, given annually to a graduating senior who demonstrates personal character on and off the court similar to that modeled by Coach Clair Bee's fictional hero, Chip Hilton. Gerry McNamara of Syracuse was the recipient of the award.
Warriors' assistant coach Mario Elie will serve as the head coach for the summer league team, while fellow Golden State assistants Russell Turner and Travis Schlenk will join him on the bench.
The Warriors' 2006 summer league entry is set to play five games in seven days at Cox Pavilion on the campus of UNLV, beginning Friday, July 7 versus the Portland Trail Blazers. Golden State's summer league entry is also scheduled to square off against teams representing the Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets and Toronto Raptors. Additionally, three of the team's five games can be seen on NBA TV (see schedule for dates and times).
