SAINT LOUIS, Mo.  —  Davidson erased a double-digit second-half deficit by using a big run, and then sealed up its first Atlantic 10 win with an offensive putback and a defensive steal in netting a 53-50 road win at Saint Louis Sunday afternoon in women's basketball action in Chaifetz Arena.

The Wildcats snapped their five-game skid to move to 5-13 overall and picked up their first league win in five tries. Saint Louis falls to 8-10 overall and 1-4 in A-10 action.

Davidson overcame a 41-31 deficit with nine minutes to go by running off a 16-2 spurt that gave it a brief 47-43 lead. The 'Cats used the three-ball to assist them in getting back in it, canning three of their six second-half three-pointers during the run.

Then after SLU's Jamesia Price scored seven straight points to give the Billikens a 50-49 lead, Davidson came right back and got an offensive rebound by Dakota Dukes, who hit the go-ahead basket on a putback for a 51-50 lead and 35 seconds left.

The 'Cats turned up the defense on SLU's next possession, forcing a turnover with six seconds to go and Hannah Early sealed the win by making a pair of free throws for the program's first A-10 win. SLU's last-second shot fell well short on a long trey attempt.

Early led all scorers with 17 points, getting 14 of them in the second half and 15 total on five shots from downtown. Alexandra Long, who canned two of the 'Cats three triples during the big run, finished with 10 points to go with four rebounds and two assists.

Dukes also reached the double digits with an even 10 points, and had six rebounds and three steals.

Saint Louis had just one reach double figures with Denisha Womack scoring 10 points off the bench to go with eight rebounds. Three other Billikens scored at least eight points.

Davidson regrouped after shooting just 23.1 percent in the first half, nailing 41.4 percent of its shots in the new half and going 6-of-11 from long range. SLU was held to 29.1 percent shooting for the game, including 30.8 percent in the second half.

Much like it had in the first four Atlantic 10 games, Davidson got off to a solid start in the first half as it raced out to an 11-4 lead after Mackenzie Latt it a bucket inside with 13:33 on the clock. Things did not continue that way though for the 'Cats, as they then went cold and were scoreless for the next 10 minutes.

SLU took advantage, going on a 14-0 run to grab an 18-11 advantage, getting eight of those points from Maddison Gits. Davidson finally broke through on a pair of Saadia Timpton free throws, and after being down by as many as 10, cut the deficit in half with another pair of free throws, this time by Diona Johnson, to go into the break down 23-18.

Both teams struggled to find their stoke in the half, going just a combined 14-for-55 from the floor (25.5 percent).

The Wildcats will return home for a 7 p.m. contest against Richmond Wednesday, Jan. 21.

GAME NOTES: Today's game was the first between both schools … Davidson registered its 16th game with 10 or more offensive rebounds … Early has scored in double figures in 17 of the 18 games this year and 45 times overall for her career … with her 17 points today, Early is now 79 points from reaching 1,000 for her career ...
