Turnovers Hurt Wildcats in 56-48 Defeat to Richmond

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Despite holding Richmond to 29.8 percent shooting for the game, Davidson coughed the ball up 32 times and saw the Spiders erase a double-digit second half lead in falling 56-48 Wednesday evening in an Atlantic 10 matchup in John M. Belk Arena.
Up 34-21 with 12:53 remaining after running off a 14-1 run, the Wildcats (5-14, 1-5 A-10) saw Richmond rattle off an 18-5 spurt to get back in the game and then finish it off by outscoring the 'Cats 12-4 in the last three minutes after the game had been tied at 44-all.
Of Davidson's 32 total turnovers, 12 of them came after it had grabbed the 13-point lead, the largest of the game.
The Spiders (11-7, 3-2 A-10) put three players in double figures in points with Lauren Tolson leading the way with 16. Genevieve Okoro had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Olivia Healy added 12 off the bench.
The trio scored 10 of the final 12 points for Richmond, with Tolson netting the last six, including 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. The Spiders went 6-for-6 in the last 1:21 at the charity stripe and 21-for-24 overall.
Dakota Dukes led the 'Cats with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting and added another four points from the line. Hannah Early chipped in 11, while Mackenzie Latt pulled in 12 rebounds to go with six points.
Alexandra Long scored nine points, had six rebounds and four assists.
Richmond took advantage of the Wildcats' miscues, turning them into 35 points, while the 'Cats were only able to turn 17 Spider turnovers into 13 points.
After hitting just 19.4 percent of its field goals in the first half, Richmond came back to shot 42.3 percent in the new half. Davidson, which held an 18-17 lead after the first half, finished the game shooting 37.5 percent.
Davidson pulled in a game-high 43 rebounds, getting 11 of them on the offensive end. It was the 17th game this year the Wildcats have recorded 10 or more on the offensive glass.
The Wildcats will head to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face Duquesne in another Atlantic 10 tilt Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Early has scored in double figures in 18 of the 19 games this year and 46 times overall for her career … she is now 68 points away from 1,000 for her career … Early's 53 three-pointers on the season are 13 away from tying Ashley Lax's single-season record of 66 set in 2008-09 … Latt's double-figure rebounding night was her eighth of the season … in the last two games combined Davidson has hit 20-of-25 shots at the free-throw line.
