DAVIDSON, N.C. — Despite freshman Mackenzie Latt recording her fifth double-double of the season, Davidson came up short, 63-54, against La Salle in its inaugural Atlantic 10 game in John M. Belk Arena Sunday afternoon.
After a fast start to the game that saw the Wildcats race out to a 12-3 lead, they played catch up the rest of the game before falling to 4-10. La Salle won its fourth straight contest and improved to 10-4 on the season.
Latt helped spark the fast start, scoring seven points in those first four minutes on her way to 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Dakota Dukes came off the bench for 11 points and eight rebounds, while Hannah Early added eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists in playing all 40 minutes. The junior saw her streak of scoring in double figures come to an end at 13 straight games.
The Explorers' Alicia Cropper scored a game-high 19 points, getting 12 of them on three-pointers. Micahya Owens chipped in 14 points and Amy Griffin scored 11 to go with eight rebounds off the bench. Siobhan Beslow had nine points and 11 rebounds.
After trailing 34-23 at the half, Davidson charged back with a 13-4 run behind four points each from Latt and Saadia Timpton to open the new half and get within two. La Salle answered with a three-pointer by Owens and added four more points over the next couple minutes to make it 45-38.
Davidson continued to fight back, finally tying the game up at 45-all on a 15-foot jumper by Alexandra Long with 10:36 remaining.
The tied would last over the next two minutes, with the 'Cats twice having a change to break it, but Cropper hit yet another three-pointer for La Salle and added two free throws to give the Explorers a 50-45 lead with 7:40 on the clock.
The 'Cats kept it close and would get within five (57-52) on a Dukes layup with 2:15 left, but La Salle hit four free throws and a fast-break layup in the final 1:18 to hold on. Some late misses at the free throw would hurt Davidson. It went 2-for-8 in the last three minutes and just 8-for-18 overall in the second half.
After their fast start to begin the game in the first half, the 'Cats were unable to keep the pace up and the Explorers, behind Cropper came back. They ran off a 21-5 spurt to grab a 24-17 lead and eventually push it to 11 (34-23) at halftime. Cropper had 13 of her 14 first-half points in the run, getting hitting nine of those points on three-pointers.
Niether team could find their shooting stroke, with Davidson finishing at 33.9 percent for the game and La Salle closing out at 34.3 percent. Both teams also were just 9-for-20 from the free-throw line. Davidson did reach the 50-rebound mark for the second time this year, with 17 of them coming on the offensive end.
Davidson continues its three-day homestand Wednesday, Jan. 7, with an Education Day game at 12 p.m. against Dayton.
GAME NOTES: Davidson was previously a member of the Southern Conference, which lasted 21 years … Timpton tied her season-high with four assists … today's game was the first time the Wildcats had ever faced the Explorers in their 36-year history … Davidson fell to 12-10 all-time in league openers and saw their six-game win streak halted when opening league play at home … Early is 147 points away from joining the 1,000-point club.
