DAVIDSON, N.C. – Appearances in the NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament, the Jimmy V Basketball Classic and the Wooden Tradition along with a home game against local rival Winthrop and a meeting with NC State in Charlotte highlight the Davidson basketball schedule, announced by coach Bob McKillop today.

“The challenges of last year's schedule were instrumental in preparing us for our magical run at the end of the season,” said McKillop. “Our aim in creating this year's schedule was to present ourselves with similar challenges, and I think we have accomplished that.”

The Wildcats will open the 2008-09 campaign Nov. 17, against James Madison in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament in Norman, Okla. In the new format of the tournament, Davidson will play four games on consecutive weekends regardless of the outcomes. The Wildcats will meet either Oklahoma or Mississippi Valley State Nov. 18, and play a pair of contests between Nov. 24-28, at a site to be determined.

Sandwiched between the four games is the home opener against former Big South rival Winthrop, in what will be the Eagles' first trip to Belk Arena since a 68-67 victory Jan. 25, 1991. Davidson will host NC State at Time Warner Cable Arena Dec. 6, before traveling to New York to face West Virginia in Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Basketball Classic Dec. 9. It will be the 'Cats' first game in MSG since playing Syracuse in the 1972 NIT and Davidson's first meeting with West Virginia since the 1994 NIT.

Davidson opens Southern Conference play against Chattanooga in Belk Arena Dec. 13, and the 'Cats will travel to Indianapolis to face Purdue in Conseco Fieldhouse in the Wooden Tradition Dec. 20. The first conference road game at the College of Charleston Dec. 29 closes out the calendar year.

SoCon newcomer Samford makes its first appearance in Belk Arena since 1993 on Jan. 3, and Davidson travels to Duke for the yearly meeting with the Blue Devils Jan. 7. The Wildcats finish the non-conference slate with a BracketBuster game in Belk Arena Feb. 21 or 22. The opponent, date and time of that game will be set at the end of January.

In the unbalanced league schedule, the Wildcats face each team twice except for Appalachian State and Western Carolina. Davidson travels to the Holmes Center to face the Mountaineers Jan. 12, and hosts the Catamounts Feb. 2. After finishing the regular-season schedule at Elon March 1, Davidson will compete in the Southern Conference Tournament March 6-9, in McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.

“My history in the Southern Conference has taught me that conference play is always competitive from top to bottom. This year will be no different. ” said McKillop. “Every team has a chance to win the conference tournament and earn an NCAA bid.”

Davidson returns three starters and 11 lettermen, including four of its top six scorers, from the 2007-08 team that advanced to the Midwest Regional Final and finished the season ranked ninth in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
