DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Southern Conference announced today that Davidson's Stephen Curry has been named the 2009 Bob Waters Male Athlete of the Year and will be honored as part of the league's annual Honors Dinner tonight at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Hilton Head Island.
Curry becomes the first male athlete to win the award in consecutive years since Appalachian State's Dexter Coakley took home the award in 1996 and 1997. It is the sixth time the honor has gone to a Davidson Wildcat and the 22nd time the winner has been from men's basketball.
A junior guard for Davidson in 2008-09, Curry was a consensus first-team All-American and led the nation in scoring with 28.6 points per game. Curry led the Southern Conference in assists (5.6/gm) and steals (2.5/gm), earning first-team all-conference and the league's Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season.
Curry became Davidson's and the Southern Conference's career scoring leader and ranks 25th on the NCAA Division I career scoring chart (2,635 points) and fourth in 3-pointers (414). He was named the league Player of the Week a record eight times in 2008-09 and earned Player of the Month accolades three times.
A sociology major, Curry participated in a shoe drive on campus, which collected over 10,000 pairs of shoes to be delivered to Nigeria. He is active among youth church groups in the Charlotte area and spoke to the Athletes in Action at the 2009 Final Four. He also participated in Davidson Buzzkill, an event spearheaded by teammate Bryant Barr, which raised over $15,000 for Nothing But Nets, an organization dedicated to preventing malaria in Africa by providing anti-mosquito bed nets for families to sleep under.
