DAVIDSON, N.C.— Davidson basketball coach Bob McKillop announced today that former Wildcat Landry Kosmalski '00 is joining his staff as an assistant coach.
“Loyalty, a passion for the game, exceptional talent - a description that fit Landry during his playing days,” said McKillop. “Now, we are very fortunate to have him fit Davidson basketball in the same way as he returns to our coaching staff.”
This will be Kosmalski's second stint on the Davidson coaching staff as he helped the Wildcats to a 43-20 record and a 26-5 Southern Conference mark while an assistant coach from 2004-06. Kosmalski returns to Davidson after spending the last two years as the Dean of Students and boys varsity basketball coach at The Webb School in Knoxville, Tenn.
“It's going to be special to be reunited with Coach McKillop and go back to my alma mater,” Kosmalski said. “It's a great opportunity. Having experienced life as a Davidson student-athlete, I have a strong understanding of what the team has to go through day in and day out.”
Kosmalski was the Wildcats' marquee player during his four years, helping Davidson to a Southern Conference championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament during his sophomore season. For his career, the power forward averaged almost 13 points per game, as well as nearly eight rebounds a contest. Kosmalski ranks third all-time on Davidson's rebounding charts with 877, 13th in scoring with 1,438 points and tied for 10th in steals (121).
The Bedford, Texas, native is one of two Wildcats to be named conference freshman of the year by both the media and the coaches. A two-time first team all-conference performer, Kosmalski ranked among the top three rebounders in the SoCon in three of his four years.
Following his collegiate career, he spent three years playing professionally in Sweden for the A1 league's 08 Stockholm and Sodertalje Kings before finishing his professional career in France in 2004. Stockholm won the Swedish championship upon Kosmalski's arrival, as he took home the league's Forward of the Year honor. He played his final season with Valence, a team in southwest France.
Davidson returns 10 letterwinners and two starters from the 2008-09 team, which posted a 27-8 record and advanced to the NIT second round. The Wildcat basketball program recently received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for having an Academic Progress Rate in the top-10 percent nationally.
