Second Davidson BUZZKILL Set for May 2
3/16/2010 1:59:52 PM | Men's Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C.— Spearheaded by senior guard Bryant Barr, the Davidson men's basketball team will host the second Davidson BUZZKILL, a 3-on-3 tournament and auction, May 2, from 2-5 p.m. in Belk Arena to raise money for Nothing But Nets, an organization dedicated to preventing malaria in Africa.
Current Golden State rookie and former Wildcat Stephen Curry will join his former teammates back on campus for the event and serve as a guest coach for one of the participating teams.
The tournament is a double-elimination event for 3rd-8th graders, who will be split into three divisions, with 10 teams in each. There are four players on each team, and the registration fee is $50 per team. Teams can register online at davidsonbuzzkill.weebly.com.
Teams are asked to raise extra money by getting sponsors, and teams will have the opportunity to choose a current or former Davidson player to be their coach through a draft based on the amount of money they raised. All participants will get a free t-shirt to be worn as a jersey during the competition.
A live auction and silent auction will take place as part of the tournament. Notable auction items include a round of golf for three with Curry at River Run Golf Course, a lobster dinner with The White Lobster (Barr's nickname), a Davidson bench chair signed by coach Bob McKillop, autographed Curry game-worn shoes, a night on the air with Davidson radio broadcaster John Kilgo, a Davidson retired jerseys poster signed by the players who wore them and two seats on the bench for a Wildcat game in 2010-11.
The silent auction will be online, starting April 25 and ending at 4 p.m. May 2. Those attending the event will still be able to participate in the silent auction as computers will be set up in the arena, and volunteers will be available to facilitate the bidding process.
“All the money that we raise goes toward the purchase of malaria nets for African countries,” said Barr. “One of the most dramatic statistics that really pops out at you is that a child dies every 30 seconds due to malaria, and the disease affects Africa's economy so much that they lose almost $12 billion every year. As a Division I basketball player, I've been really blessed and really fortunate to do some amazing things. To give a little bit of ourselves is not too much to ask.”
Last year's Davidson BUZZKILL?raised over $16,000, which was donated to Nothing But Nets and used to purchase over 1,600 bed nets, protecting more than 6,400 people from malaria.
Nothing But Nets is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing anti-mosquito bed nets for families in Africa to aid in the prevention of malaria and other insect related diseases. For just $10, you can provide a net that can protect a whole family from a disease that kills approximately 3,000 people a day and someone every 30 seconds.
