DAVIDSON, N.C. — After having one of her best all-around games in her career, junior Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) was tabbed the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played, Jan. 24-30, as announced by the league today.
The junior captured her second career player of the week honor and she is the second Wildcat this year to grab the award after Laura Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) was named the league's weekly top player, Jan. 3. It also marks the 25th time a Wildcat has been honored with the award.
Playing just one game during the week, Aleksandravicius made that one game count as it will stick in the memories of Wildcat fans for awhile. On Monday, Jan. 30, the 6-foot-4 junior was a single block away from recording the first triple-double in program history when she tallied game highs of 20 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots to go with three steals in leading the Wildcats to a 78-57 victory over Furman. The win gave Davidson a sweep of the season-series vs. the Paladins.
Aleksandravicius' nine blocks set a new school record, topping her old mark of seven. She also tied for second in the SoCon for the most blocks in a single-game. Davidson's 11 blocks as a team were just one away from tying the school record.
The junior tied her season-high by hitting 10-of-15 field goals on her way to her 17th career 20-point outing— 5th this year. She has scored in double figures in all but one game this season and currently is on a 13-game streak of scoring 10 or more points.
Her double-double on Monday was the ninth of the season and 28th for her career.
With a 9.4 rebounding average, Aleksandravicius paces the SoCon, while she is fourth in scoring at 14.8 points. She also leads the league in blocks with 68 (3.4 per game) and ranks ninth in the nation.
Earlier this year she became Davidson's 15th player to eclipse the 1,000-point mark and currently sits in seventh all-time with 1,153 points. She holds the school mark in career blocks with 212 and counting.
The Wildcats, who just finished a 6-2 month of January, hit the road for a pair of contests to start February. They will play at College of Charleston on Saturday, Feb. 4, and then travel to Georgia Southern, Feb. 6. Davidson won both of the first meetings this year against the Cougars and Eagles.
